It has been a while since the name Sydney McLaughlin has been discussed here on Project RACE, and I think this Famous Friday is a great time to mention her again! Sydney was born on August 7, 1999 in Dunellen, New Jersey and is of White and Black descent.

McLaughlin is a hurdler and Sprinter who has competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics and qualified for this year’s summer Olympics in Tokyo!

She most likely got her passion for running from her parents, who were both runners. Her father was even a semi-finalist at the 1984 Olympic Trials! Her brother also has a passion for running, as he won silver in the 400-hurdles at the IAAF World U20 Championships in 2016. McLaughlin began running at just six years old. From there she went on to attend events from the IAAF World Junior Championships all the way to the Olympics!  In 2016, McLaughlin became the youngest U.S. Track and Field athlete to compete in the Olympics since 1976.

If you’ve been watching the Olympic Trials or been keeping tabs on Sydney, you’ll know she recently set a new world record! On June 27, 2021, McLaughlin set the world record for women’s 400-hurdles to 51.90 seconds. In fact, she is the first woman to break 52 seconds in the event. Along with this, she has broken 13 seconds for 100-meter hurdles and 23 seconds for 200-meter hurdles, Incredible! Keep an eye out for Sydney this summer, I’m excited to see her success!
