White and African-American numbers are dropping

In the past decade, the percentage of students classified as white or African-American has been dropping, while the percentage of Hispanic, Asian and mixed-race students is on the increase.

Below is a look at the numbers.

The percentage of Asian students increased from 2.6% in fall 2009 to 3.4% in fall 2018. The percentage of mixed-race students increased from 1.3% to 4% during that time frame.

About 4% of Michigan students are foreign-born, Census data shows.

COMMENT: While we are encouraged by seeing the raise in Multiracial numbers, we would rather have seen it called “multiracial” or “two or more races” instead of “other.”
