Project RACE Model
Date: 1997
The Project RACE model for adding the multiracial category on federal forms,
OMB Directive 15, Census forms, etc. is below. When we testified in 1993 we
suggested a format for federal purposes that instructed a multiracial person
to ALSO choose their racial combinations from a list of categories listed
underneath the multiracial category. When we answered the OMB's federal
register notice in 1995 we asked for the same type of configuration.
Although these models yield the most accurate date, we have been told by the
OMB and Census Bureau that they "take up too much real estate on the forms."
We have also been told that "multiethnic" will definitely NOT be considered.
Using the model below, which we presented to the OMB and the Congressional
subcommittee charged with looking at this issue, the numbers would be
allocated accordingly. It is accurate and it would yield results that could
be easily coded and tabulated.
